   Research & Development activities

1995 to date

  • In 1996, our R&D laboratories were granted recognition by Department of Scientific and Industrial Rsesearch ( DSIR ), Government of India, to carry our research in the field of polymers, more specifically in the field of polyimides and phenolics.
  • With financial assistance from DSIR, IDBI and ABROL, our laboratories were equipped with state of art analytical instruments useful for both research and production.
  • During the course of research on polyimides, the following developments were made:
  • Molding grade polyimides, equivalent to Vespel of DuPont.
  • Curators for epoxy resin based on polyimide chains. These curators contain amine as well as anhydride terminated polyimide chains. The aim of developing these curators was to enhance the service temperature of epoxy resins to about 240oC, at the same time keeping the cure temperature as  low as 150oC.
  • Addition type polyimides. The addition type polyimides have  a distinct advantage over condensation type polyimides  when used for coatings.
  • The R&D team had developed solventless Resol type phenol formaldehyde resin in 1995, which finds use in making refractory bricks & Liquid rocket nozzles components.
  • Our laboratories have undertaken a research contract from Defence Research and Developmental Organisation, Government of India, for a detailed study of the synthesis parameters affecting the molecular weight distribution of phenolic resins. The project has been completed successfully.
  • Our laboratories have undertaken a contract research from another M/s. Lance Organics Private Limited for the process development of phenothaizines. Phenothiazines find use as intermediates for anti-psychotic and anti-histamine drugs.
  • Research project has been sanctioned by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, for development of porous graphite paper for use in fuel cells.
  • Development of modified Polyester based on THEIC for enameling of circular Copper conductors completed.
  • Development of Phenolic Resins for Pultrusion using glass roving completed.
  • Development of Hand Lay up grade Phenolic resin, curable at RT, using chopped strand mats completed.

Research
Projects in pipeline

  • A collaborative project has been initiated with Membrane Separation Group, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Government of India, to modify polyimide membranes to enhance the selectivity in gas separations, dehydration of solvents etc.
  • Development of  poly-ether-imides, poly-amide-imides etc. for enameling applications is to be taken up during 2004 -2006.
  • Currently working on the development of  PMR type of polyimide resins.

Expansion
Plans for future

  • A proposal is being planned for the manufacture of polyimide based FRP laminates and polyimide films for electrical insulation.  The polyimide laminates find use in traction motors and heavy electricals.
